Robert Park MacGoun arrived in New Zealand from Glasgow in 1862. He was a skilled draughtsman and his accurate drawing and econimical use of the medium of watercolour is much superior to the work of many of the English and European surveyors. MacGoun was employed by the County Council in Invercargill as a county clerk in the 1870's. It was during this time that he painted the majority of the Southland works.
Anderson Park Art Gallery is situated on McIvor Road off State Highway 6 (Invercargill - Queenstown Highway) seven kilometres north of the city centre.
